% Notes about the CU Niwot Ridge AmeriFlux instrumentation and data % processing in 2013. % % % November 28, 2014 % SpB. (sean.burns@colorado.edu) For more complete details see the calendar page at: http://urquell.colorado.edu/calendar/ and the electronic logbook at: http://urquell.colorado.edu/logbook/ -------------------------------------------------------------- -- between Sept 10-15, 2013 there was a historic flood along the front range in Colorado. The tower site experienced heavy rain and lost power during this period. -- the week following the flood event a pair of young moose were observed frolicking in the pond near the trailer at C1: http://urquell.colorado.edu/sean/moose.avi -- between July 23rd and August 2nd the AmeriFlux QA/QC team (Stephen Chan, Sebastien Biraud) setup comparison instruments on the tower. -- In June, a LI-7200 borrowed from NEON (main contact: Stefan Metzger) was setup at 21.5m near the LI-6262 inlet (note: the LI-7200 was returned to NEON in Oct, 2013). -- In Oct, the NEON LI-7200 was replaced by a LI-7200 borrowed from LI-COR (setup at 21.5m near the LI-6262 inlet). -- In Sept, a CPEC200 was setup by Ed Swaitek at 21.5m ner the LI-6262 inlet. It was between the LI-6262 inlet and LI-7200 (much closer to the LI-7200). -- The Met One tipping bucket precipitation sensor on the tower stopped working after a big snowstorm on 15 April 2013 (the "bucket" came off of the points holding it). It was repaired on Sept 5th. However, the calibration has not been checked and comparisons with other precipitation sensors near C-1 show that the Met One sensor was showing problems as early as summer 2011. If absolute values of precipitation are needed, this sensor should not be used. Either the Geonor sensor at C1 or USCRN site at Hills Mills (ie "Boulder 14W") should be used. see: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/crn/qcdatasets.html In climate_2013_ver.2014.12.02.dat, we have used the USCRN precip data in place of the Met One data. -- the AM25T mux used for the bole temperature has a ref temperature problem (this caused data prior to day 145 of 2014 to be unfixable). Bole temperature data from late 2012 had the same issue (but have not yet been set to NaN). -- The 2m TRH sensor did not work at all in 2013. The 2-m temperature data in the climate data file is from a thermocouple at 2m. There is no RH data available (all set to NaN). -- on 14 February, the LI-6262 Gast pump dies. Replaced on 17 February. -- between 5 March and 7 May a loaner LI-6262 (sn IRG3-638) was used in place of LI-6262 (sn IRG3-638) which was sent back to LI-COR for recalibration. -- between 27 June and 23 July the krypton hygrometer was removed from the tower and sent back to Campbell to get the detector tubes replaced/recharged. -- In the summer, Ethan Gutmann (NCAR) and others setup tree compression sensors between the main tower and North Canopy tower. -- In the Fall, Mark Raleigh (NCAR ASP) setup several wingscape cameras. --------------------------------------------------------------
